ITSS home : ResNet : FAQ : Changing the Adminstrator password

ResNet

ResNet Logo

Problem: When I try to register my computer on ResNet, I get the following security alert:

10394 - SMB log in - Set passwords for all users on the system

Solution: One of more Adminstrator or Guest accounts on your computer have a blank or weak password, making your computer easier to break into or hack. For network security (and yours), you will need to set a strong password for all Adminstrator and Guest accounts on your computer.

Set a password for the Administrator account

The surest way to reset all administrator-level passwords is through the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) as follows:

  1. Log into your computer (this must be with an adminstrator-level account).
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type mmc, and then click OK to start MMC (Console1).
  4. Start the Local Users and Groups snap-in:
    • Select File - Add/remove snapin
    • Select the Add... button
    • Select Local Users and Groups from the list, then click the Add button.
    • On the Choose Target Machine window, select the default Local computer and the Finish button.
    • Select the Close button to close the Add Standalone Snap-in window, then OK to close the Add/Remove Snap-in window.
  5. Under Console Root, expand "Local Users and Groups" (click on the + sign), and then click Users.
    Select Local Users
  6. In the right pane, right-click "Administrator", and then select Set Password.
  7. Click Proceed in the message box that appears.
  8. Type and confirm the new password in the appropriate boxes, and then click OK.
NOTE: DO NOT use "administrator" or "admin" as the password.

Set a password for the Guest account

  1. In the right pane, right-click "Guest", and then select Set Password.
  2. Click Proceed in the message box that appears.
  3. Type and confirm the new password in the appropriate boxes, and then click OK.
NOTE: DO NOT use "guest" as the password.

Set a password for the Administrator account

The Administrator account is not displayed in User Accounts unless the computer is in Safe mode. To change the password for the Administrator account in Windows XP Home:

  1. Click Start, click Turn Off Computer, and then click Restart.
  2. After the computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), press F8, and then select Safe mode from the menu.
NOTE: If you have difficulty getting to the Safe mode menu command, press F8 repeatedly after you turn on the computer.
  3. Log on as an Administrator (if you're at this point, it probably has no password), or with another account that has Administrator permissions.
  4. Click Start - Settings - Control Panel, and then click User Accounts.
  5. Click the Administrator icon.
  6. Click "Create a Password or Change my password".
  7. Type a password for the account, and then retype the password to confirm it.
NOTE: DO NOT use "administrator" or "admin" as the password.
  8. Type a hint to help you remember the password in the event that you forget it.
  9. Click "Create Password or Change Password".

Set a password for the Guest account

  1. Restart your computer (in normal mode) and log in as "Administrator" (with the password you just set).
  2. Click Start - Run, then type: cmd and press OK.
  3. In the command window, type: net user guest *
  4. Type a password when prompted.
NOTE: DO NOT use "guest" as the password.
