Removing Ares

1 Uninstall NAVHELPER

  1. Open the Control Panel (START - Control Panel)
  2. Double click on Add/Remove Programs
  3. Look for a program called NavHelper. This is a program installed with Ares.
  4. If you find NavHelper, uninstall it

2 Set Ares preferences

  1. Open Ares.
  2. Click on Preferences.
  3. Go to the General section.
  4. UNCHECK the first 3 boxes:
_  Load Ares when windows starts
_  Auto-connect to network when I start Ares
      _  Start Ares minimized
  5. CHECK the last box:
x  Exit Ares when I click on close button
  6. Close Ares.

3 Uninstall Ares

Ares automatically installs NavHelper, which is an adware program. Uninstalling Ares does not automatically remove NavHelper, so they should be removed at the same time.

  1. Verify that Ares is not running - check the system tray in the lower right corner of your window for the Ares icon.
  2. Select Start - Programs - Ares, then select Uninstall. Wait until "uninstalled successfully" is displayed.

4 Verify that all Ares files and folders are removed

  1. Select Start - Search.
  2. Select "All files and folders".
  3. In the text box, type: Ares
  4. Click the Search button.
  5. Delete any found items that have Ares as their name -- not just as part of their name (Ex: Delete Ares.xxx. Do not delete: Squares).
  6. Finally, empty any deleted Ares files/folders from the Recycle Bin.

5 Run a spyware check

Most adware and spyware is included with other "free" software that you download from the Internet. To find and remove it from your computer, try one of these programs:

An important note: While the paid versions of anti-spyware can be set to update and scan automatically, most free versions require the user to manually download updates and run scans. Installing these free versions without running the updates or scans will not protect your computer.
