Check the Ethernet Adapter Properties

Verify that the Ethernet adapter is installed and operating properly.

For Windows 95/98/ME users:

  1. Select START - Settings - Control Panel
  2. Double-click on the System icon
  3. Click on the Device Manager tab. Find Network Adapters in the list. If there is a plus sign (+) next to network adapters, click on it. Is your Ethernet adapter in the list?

For Windows 2000 users:

  1. Select START - Settings - Control Panel
  2. Double-click on the System icon
  3. Click on the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button. Find Network Adapters in the list. If there is a plus sign (+) next to network adapters, click on it. Is your Ethernet adapter in the list?

For Windows XP users:

  1. Click on START - My Computer
  2. Under "System Tasks," select View System Information.
  3. Click on the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button. Find Network Adapters in the list. If there is a plus sign (+) next to network adapters, click on it. Is your Ethernet adapter in the list?

If the Ethernet adapter is listed under Network Adapters:

Click on it once to select it and click on the Properties button. Check the Device Status, then refer to the following chart.

Device status What to do
If the Device status is "Device is working properly" Go to Check the Network Properties.
If the Device Status indicates a problem For Windows 2000/XP users
Click on the Troubleshoot button and follow the instructions.
For Windows 95/98/ME users
For an IRQ conflict, change the adapter settings as follows:
  1. Uncheck "Use Automatic Settings"
  2. Scroll through the available IRQs (click on the down arrow) until you find one that indicates there is not conflict. (If none free, try using IRQ3/4 (com ports) or IRQ7 (printer).)
  3. Click OK to save the settings. Restart your computer and run WINIPCFG to test the connection.

If the problem persists, try removing and reinstalling the adapter from the list:

  1. Write down the exact name of the Ethernet adapter listed (for example: SMC 10/100 PCI Ethernet).
  2. Highlight it again, click Remove, and then OK.
  3. Restart the computer when prompted.
  4. Check the adapter properties to see if the conflict has been resolved.
For a driver problem, update the drivers as follows:
  1. Insert the Ethernet adapter driver diskette/CD and go to Ethernet adapter properties - Driver
  2. Select "Update Driver". When prompted, check the box (diskette or CD) for the Ethernet adapter driver.

If the Ethernet adapter is not listed under Network Adapters:

Check under "Other Devices" or "Unknown". If it is listed under either of these, it usually means either the incorrect driver was used or the Ethernet adapter is not physically installed properly in the slot (Windows can't detect it properly). To reinstall the adapter driver:

  1. Click once on the Ethernet adapter in the list and select the Remove button. When prompted to restart your computer, select No. Instead, select START - Shutdown to turn the computer off.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then turn the computer on again.
  3. When the computer restarts, follow the installation procedure you received with your Ethernet adapter and use the driver disk that came with the adapter (not your Windows CD).

If the same problem occurs, go to Step 1: Install an Ethernet Adapter.

If the Ethernet adapter is not listed anywhere in Device Manager:

The adapter is either not working properly or is not installed properly. Go to Step 1: Install an Ethernet Adapter.

If more than one Ethernet adapter is listed:

Physically remove one of the Ethernet adapters from the computer. Or, disable one in the Device Manager as follows:

  1. Click once on the Ethernet adapter you want to disable, then click on the Properties button.
  2. Under Device Usage, check the "Disable in this hardware profile" box, then click OK.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Run WINIPCFG to test the connection.

Is your connection working now?
