Spyware, adware, malware and pop-ups
Problem: My computer is running really really slooooooow.
Problem: When I start by web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape), I get tons of annoying pop-ups.
Solution: Install and run spyware checking software.
Spyware, adware and malware take many forms: some interfere with web access, some monitor your network usage, some turn your computer into one big annoying advertisement. If your computer is on the network, you have spyware on it. Spybot is a free program that checks for and removes hundreds of spyware, adware, and malware programs.
Download and install Spybot
- You can get a copy of Spybot on the latest ITSS Security CD (KPLz 165 - ITSS Maintenance), or you can download a copy here: Download Spybot
(To download, click on the link, then specify "Save". Remember where you save the file - we suggest creating a "resnet" folder on the desktop.)- Find the spybot file on your computer and double-click it to begin the installation. Follow the on screen instructions, accepting the default recommendations. Select Install to install the software.
- Restart your computer.
Run a Spybot scan
Start Spybot (double-click on the desktop icon or select START - Programs - Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot S&D (easy mode).
On the Legal Stuff window, click OK to continue.
If you get compatability warnings, read these carefully, then click OK to continue.
Click the Check for problems button to begin the scan.

Mark all items found, and click on the "Fix selected problems" link. ![]()
To protect against further spyware infections, (1) click the Immunize icon in the left column to start the check, (2) click OK to close the warning window, then (3) click the Immunize button.
