Configure network software for Windows 95/98/ME

  1. Select START - Settings - Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Network icon to display the Network Properties window.

  3. If TCP/IP is not in the list of installed network components, click on the Add button, select Protocol from the list, and click on the Add button again.
  4. From the left list, select Microsoft. From the right list, select TCP/IP. Click OK at the bottom of this screen.
  5. Highlight TCP/IP and click the Properties button and verify the following:
    • IP Address tab: Obtain IP address automatically
    • WINS Configuration tab: Use DHCP for WINS resolution
    • Gateway tab: No gateways set
    • DNS Configuration tab: Disable DNS
    • Detect network media (Windows ME users only): Uncheck the box
    Click OK to accept.
  6. In the Network Properties window, remove the following components if listed (highlight each one individually and click the Remove button):
    • Client for Netware Networks
    • Microsoft Family Login (Note: Leave Microsoft Client for Networks)
  7. Set the Primary Network Logon to "Windows Login".
  8. Click on the Identification tab and complete the fields as follows:
    • Computer name: your UMD username (for ex: jdoe0011)
    • Workgroup: ub_group
    • Computer Description: anything

  9. Click OK at the bottom of the Network screen.
  10. Windows 95/98 will copy the appropriate files (it may prompt you to insert your Windows 95/98 CD - click here if you don't have your CD) and display a prompt to restart Windows 95/98. Select Yes to restart.

Run WINIPCFG to verify your IP address

When your computer restarts, run the WINIPCFG utility to verify that your computer is properly configure for Ethernet access. [an error occurred while processing this directive]

If you still don't have an IP address in the format 10.5.xxx.xxx, go to Check the Ethernet Adapter properties.
