You can use most game consoles on either the wired or wireless network. In general, the wired connection will provide better service.

Before using your device on the UMD network, you will need to register it in one of the following ways.

Register from your game console web browser

If your gaming console (or other network device) supports DHCP and has a browser that supports SSL & cookies, you can register it with ITSS directly from the console.

1. From your game console, open the web browser.
2. Complete the online registration for wired jacks at: https://netreg.d.umn.edu/.

Register from your computer using our online forms

If your gaming console (or other network device) does not have a web browser, you can register the device from your computer using one of our online forms. To complete these forms, you will need to know the MAC address of your device. Note that your device will likely have both a wired and a wireless MAC address - be sure to write down the correct one. For help, see Find the MAC address of your game console below.

Wired jack: If your gaming console (or other network device) supports DHCP and a wired connection but doesn't have a web browser:

1. From your computer, go to: Register your Console - Wired Jacks
2. Enter the wired MAC address

Wireless: If your gaming console (or other network device) supports DHCP and wireless but doesn't have a web browser:

1. From your computer, go to: Register your wireless device
2. Enter the wireless MAC address.

Connect your game console thru your registered computer

If your gaming console or network device does not have a verifiable MAC address, you can register your computer, then connect your device through the computer via Internet Connection Sharing.

Use guest wireless for other devices

If you do not know the MAC address of your network device, you may be able to connect to the guest wireless network. Availability and instructions for connecting to the guest wireless network are here: Wireless access.

How to find the MAC address of your game console

Follow these steps to fine your MAC address (also known as the physical address), then complete the appropriate online registration form. Note that your device will likely have both a wired and a wireless MAC address - be sure to write down the correct one. Also, double check these common errors:

• number 8 vs. letter B
• number 0 vs letter O
• number 1 vs letter l

Xbox:

1. Turn on your Xbox console with no game disc in the disc tray.
2. From the Xbox Dashboard, choose Xbox Live.
3. From the Connect Status screen, select Settings
4. The MAC address is the 12-character sequence at the bottom-right corner of the Network Settings screen.

Xbox 360:

1. Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard and select Network Settings.
2. Select Edit Settings.
3. From Additional Settings, select Advanced Settings.
4. At the bottom of this screen you'll see a heading called Wired MAC Address. Enter the 12-character sequence into the web form shown below.

PlayStation 2:

1. Load the Start-up CD in your PS2.
2. Make sure you have the network cable disconnected.
3. Walk through the Start-Up CD until it starts testing your connection. The test will fail (because you disconnected the network cable).
4. Press the Select button to display the Hardware (MAC) address.
5. The 12-character Hardware number is the MAC address of your PS2; write it down to enter in the web form shown below.

PlayStation 3:

1. Under Settings choose Network Settings
2. Select the Settings and Connection Status List
3. Scroll down to find the 12-character MAC address

Nintendo Wii:

The Nintendo Wii does not ship with the ability to connect to wired network connections. Students who wish to use the Wii online in the residence halls will need to purchase a Wii LAN Adapter and use an Ethernet cable.

1. From the Wii Channel menu, select Wii (the round button on the bottom-left of the screen with "Wii" on it) and then Wii Settings.
2. Click the right arrow to go to the second page.  Select Internet, then Console Information.
3. The MAC address of the Wii console's LAN Adapter is displayed on the second line.
