The University of Minnesota has an agreement with Symantec Corp. to provide its Norton AntiVirus (NAV) software to the University of Minnesota community. This software may be used as follows:
The Personal version is the recommended version for all Macintosh computers (it does not support OSX).
You must disable any anti-virus software you currently have running on your computer, including previous versions of Norton, Virex, Sophos, Disinfectant, or others.
To uninstall previous versions, run your Extensions Manager control panel and disable (uncheck) any anti-virus extensions.
After disabling the old anti-virus software, restart your computer.
Download Norton AntiVirus 7.0.2 for OS 8.1 - OS 9.2
Download Norton AntiVirus 8.0 for OSX
Once installed, the Norton AntiVirus software will constantly monitor your computer to prevent virus infections and will alert you of any suspicious activity. However, it cannot protect you from new viruses unless you regularly update its virus definitions.
To keep your virus protection current, you will periodically need to run the LiveUpdate feature. We recommend that you use the "Schedule Future Updates" button in the LiveUpdate window to schedule automatic weekly updates of your NAV software. This way you won't have rely on remembering to run the LiveUpdate option. Note: LiveUpdate may try to dial you into the Internet if your aren't already connected.
Students, faculty or staff who are leaving the University should uninstall all versions of NAV as you will no longer be legally licensed.
