Symantec Anti-virus & Client Security

Installing the Symantec client (Windows)

Symantec for Windows may be used as follows:

You will need to authenticate with your University Internet ID and password to download the software.

Installation instructions

  1. Uninstall any previous versions of anti-virus software. This includes previous versions of Symantec, Norton, McAffee, Command (FProt), or others.
    • Click Start.
    • Click Control Panel.
    • Click Programs.
    • Click Programs and Features.
    • Select the antivirus program (including LiveUpdate, if it appears) and click Remove.

The uninstall process sometimes leaves behind files on your computer that can prevent your programs from working correctly. You need to run a removal tool after uninstalling antivirus software.

    • If you uninstalled Norton or Symantec Antivirus, download and run the Norton Removal Tool.
    • If you uninstalled McAfee Antivirus, download and run a tool from McAfee.
    • If you uninstalled Avast Antivirus, download and run a tool from Avast.

After uninstalling the old anti-virus software, restart your computer.

  2. Download the Symantec client

    Select one of the following:

    • Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus (version 10.x)
      • Available for: Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit), Windows XP (32 and 64-bit), Windows 2000/98/ME/95
    • Symantec Client Security (version 11.x)
      • Available for: Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit), Windows XP (32 and 64-bit), Windows 2000/98/ME
      • Includes a Personal Firewall with Intrusion Detection, or you can install just the antivirus software.
      • NOTE: If you opt to install the firewall, you will need to configure it for your individual computer for each network service you use (email, web, data servers, etc.). Be cautious in using the personal firewall. It is possible to get the firewall set to a state such that you will be unable to communicate at all.
  3. Install the Symantec client

Find the installation file on your computer and double-click it to begin the installation. Setup should automatically begin. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, choose "unmanaged".

If you are prompted to update the definition files, select "Yes" to do so.

If you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.

  4. Windows Vista version only

How to get Live Update to work with Windows Vista

  5. Firewall version only

After you install the full SCS product you will be presented with various screens as you attempt to connect to various services on the network. You will also be informed when something attempts to connect to your computer. In general, it is best to follow the suggested action. However, there may be services for which you will need to change the default and either accept or reject the attempted connection. Be cautious in using the personal firewall. It is possible to get the firewall set to a state such that you will be unable to communicate at all.
