Symantec Anti-virus & Client Security

Installing the Symantec client (Windows)

Symantec for Windows may be used as follows:

You will need to authenticate with your University Internet ID and password to download the software.


Installation instructions

  1. Uninstall any previous versions of anti-virus software.

    This includes previous versions of Symantec, Norton, McAffee, Command (FProt), or others. To uninstall previous versions, select START - Settings - Control Panel - Add/Remove programs, then remove any anti-virus software as well as any LiveUpdate components. If you are prompted for a removal password, try "symantec".

    After uninstalling the old anti-virus software, restart your computer.

  2. Download the Symantec client

    Select the link below to download the installation file for the version you want. Note the download location.

    Download Symantec Anti-virus for Windows XP (most common choice)

    Download Symantec Anti-virus + Firewall (available from the Twin Cities site)

    Download Symantec Anti-virus for Windows Vista (available from the Twin Cities site)

  3. Install the Symantec client

    Find the installation file on your computer and double-click it to begin the installation. Setup should automatically begin. Follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted, choose "unmanaged".

    If you are prompted to update the definition files, select "Yes" to do so.

    If you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.

  4. Windows Vista version only

  5. Firewall version only

    If you installed a firewall version, configure the Symantec Firewall for your specific computer and networking needs.
