Your University Passwords

University students, faculty and staff have a number of different accounts and passwords they need to manage. Following is a brief description of the various accounts and passwords our customers may be using, with links to more detailed information for each.

Type of account Internet/email Novell Workstation Enterprise
What you need it for Access to UMD's central servers (email, modem pool, bulldog, Samba, Aufs, web, lab authentication).

 Access to the Novell Office server (software, file storage/sharing, network printing).

Managed by ITSS staff.

 Access to your workstation (Windows 2000/XP computers only).

Managed by the computer owner (not ITSS staff).

 Access to enterprise systems (PeopleSoft, Financial Services, etc.).

Managed by OIT and ITSS staff.
Password requirements

Length: 8 to 125 characters (some client software is limited to 32)

Restrictions:

  • Must contain characters from three of the following four categories:
    • English uppercase letters (A through Z)
    • English lowercase letters (a through z)
    • Digits (0 through 9)
    • Nonalphanumeric characters (e.g., !, #, %)
  • Can not contain all or any 3 character part of the account name
  • Can not end in a space, although it may contain spaces (e.g. '3 Brown mice')

Expires: Every 365 days

Length: At least 8 characters

Restrictions: Must contain a combination of letters, numbers and/or symbols (such as ! @ # $ % & *, etc.).

Expires: Every 365 days

Length: 8 to 128 characters

Restrictions:

  • Must contain characters from three of the following four categories:

    • Digits (0 through 9)
    • Non-alphanumeric characters (for example : , !, #, %)
  • Can not contain all or any 3 character part of the account name.
  • Can not end in a space, although it may contain spaces (e.g. '3 Brown mice').
  • Can not be the same as your Internet (x.500) password.

Expires: Every 100 days

  • Authenticate with your Internet ID and password.
  • Select "Change your Enterprise password" from the menu.
