FAQ

Do I need to use VPN from home if I connect through UMD's modem pool?
No. When you connect through UMD's modem pool, you automatically have access to all restricted resources, and your secure data is protected.
Do I need to use VPN when I check my email from home using cable modem?
No,if you use UMD Webmail or a secured version of Mulberry, Eudora, Outlook or other clients.
Does VPN provide virus protection?
No. VPN provides security by encrypting and decrypting data that passes through a VPN connection. You should continue to run virus protection (such as Norton AntiVirus).
Can I use VPN with my firewall?
Maybe. Firewalls can filter or prohibit VPN traffic. You may have to reconfigure or turn off your firewall to allow VPN traffic.
If you're running Windows or Mac, you need to let the firewall pass protocol 50 (ESP) and allow port 500 to allow IPSEC to work.
If you are running Linux, poke holes for these ports in whatever firewall you are using:
- UDP 500
- UDP 10000 (IPSec over UDP)
- IP 50 (ESP)
Will other VPN clients work with UMD's VPN server?
Other non-Cisco clients may work. However, we support only the VPN client software that we distribute.
Will my wireless Linksys router work with the VPN?
Yes, it should. However, the router firmware must be at level 1.43 or higher. Follow the instructions that came with your router for checking and upgrading the firmware version. You can download the latest firmware software for your router from the Linksys web site.
Can I access my Novell files over VPN?
Yes, but you'll need the Novell client installed on your computer. For detailed instructions on accessing the Novell office server from home, see: Novell Access from Off-campus.
