The U of M Academic Computing (AC) negotiates reduced prices with Microsoft for popular Microsoft software products for:

Department-Owned Computers

Departments can obtain Microsoft products for University-owned computers through two resources: the Microsoft Campus Agreement Program, or the Microsoft Academic Select Program.

Microsoft Campus Agreement Program for Departments

The Microsoft Campus Agreement program provides a suite of Microsoft's most popular software for use on computers that are owned by the University of Minnesota, including:

  • Windows 7 upgrade (operating system)
  • Windows Vista upgrade (operating system)
  • Office for Windows and MacOS
  • Virtual PC for MacOSX
  • Publisher
  • Visual 2003
  • Visual Studio

How to get it: There are several ways to get software thru this program:

Microsoft Academic Select Program for Departments

The Microsoft Academic Select Program allow University departments to purchase individual Microsoft software products at discounted prices. Software prices are listed on the online application form. U of M departments can purchase the software with their EFS chart string.

Faculty/Staff-Owned Computers

Faculty and staff can obtain Microsoft products for their personal computers through the Microsoft Academic Select Program for Faculty and Staff.

Microsoft Academic Select Program for Faculty and Staff

The Microsoft Academic Select Program for Faculty and Staff offers several popular Microsoft software titles at a reduced price for U of MN faculty and staff for use on their own personal computers. Software includes:

  • Office
  • OneNote
  • Project Pro
  • SharePoint Designer
  • Visio Pro
  • Windows upgrades

Student-Owned Computers

Students can obtain Microsoft products for personal computers through several resources: the Microsoft Campus Agreement Program, the Microsoft Academic Select Program, and the Dreamspark program.

Microsoft Campus Agreement Program for Students

The Microsoft Campus Agreement program provides a suite of Microsoft's most popular software for use on student personal computers:

  • Windows Operating System upgrades
  • Office for Windows and MacOS

If you are buying a new computer with Microsoft Office as an optional package, you might find it more economical to omit Office and buy it through this program.

Please note the following about this program:

  • The University of Minnesota has paid for one Microsoft Office and one Windows license per student, therefore, students are only eligible for one Office and one Windows OS option.
  • Students must be enrolled in the current or a future semester at the U of M in at least one credit course.
  • All software orders must be placed through the Microsoft student online order form, which verifies student enrollment and automatically charges your U of M student account.
  • Students have the option to pick up the software at a campus location or have it shipped directly to them (for an additional charge).
  • The software media packets are less than $16 each.
  • All media can be installed on only one computer (either one laptop or one desktop; but not both)
  • The University follows software return industry standards. Software cannot be returned if software package has been opened.

Microsoft Academic Select Program for Students

The Microsoft Academic Select Program for Students allows students to purchase individual Microsoft software products at discounted prices.

The following are available through the Microsoft Academic Select Program for Students:

  • OneNote
  • Project Pro
  • SharePoint Designer
  • Visio Pro

Dreamspark

The U of M is participating in the Microsoft DreamSpark program, which offers U of M students the option to download Microsoft developer software and designer tools free of charge.

How to get it: Visit the Microsoft DreamSpark web site to create a Windows Live account and obtain the software.
