The University and ITSS provide a variety of Windows, Macintosh and Unix-based software to students, faculty and staff, for both business and personal use. While you are free to use any software you wish, ITSS does provide a list of recommended solutions. This list is intended to provide guidance for purchase decisions and clarification of support available from ITSS, and is available at: Recommended software solutions

Cost and Availability

Some software has been site licensed and is offered at no charge, some is offered at reduced rates, and some requires additional fees or access charges for personal use. Details are provided for each item on the list below.

Software is offered in a number of ways:

• Order it from uTools: Software that is licensed at discounted prices for University faculty and staff computers. You will be required to authenticate with your University Internet ID and password, and provide an EFS number to complete the order. The software is then provided as an online download.
• Download it from ITSS / OIT: Site license software that is available at no charge for immediate download from the ITSS or OIT web site. You will be required to authenticate with your University Internet ID and password.
• Download it from <vendor>: Freeware or trial software available for immediate download directly from the vendor. Available for anyone for business or personal use. Limited ITSS support.
• Order it from UMD Computer Corner: Software for business or personal use; some products may have discounts for University students, faculty and/or staff.

Acrobat Professional (Adobe)

Acrobat software lets you convert any document to an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) file.

Apple OS

A limited Volume License Agreement has been put into place that includes Mac OS X 10.5 as well as any upgrades that might become available. The OS may be installed on any Macintosh computer that is owned by the U of M. There is no provision for server licensing and that software must be purchased elsewhere.

ArcInfo/ArcView (ESRI)

ArcInfo is the complete GIS (geographic information system) data creation, update, query, mapping, and analysis system. ArcView is a popular desktop GIS (geographic information system) and mapping software. ArcView provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit geographic data.

CCleaner

CCleaner is a system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system, which allows Windows to run faster and frees up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities (such as deleting temporary files, URL history, cookies, and download history), and deletes files in the Windows Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files.

Contribute CS4 (Adobe)

Adobe Contribute CS4 software enables users to collaboratively author, review, and publish web content while maintaining site integrity without learning HTML.

Director (Adobe)

Adobe Director MX is an ideal product to use when creating accessible kiosks, CD/DVD-ROMs, and Web-based applications. CD/DVD-ROMs and web-based applications.

Dreamspark (Microsoft)

The U of M is participating in the Microsoft DreamSpark program, which offers U of M students the option to download Microsoft developer software and designer tools free of charge. Visit the Microsoft DreamSpark web site to create a Windows Live account and obtain the software.

Dreamweaver CS4 (Adobe)

Quickly and easily design, develop, and maintain websites and web applications - from start to finish with Adobe Dreamweaver.

Email clients

ITSS supports a number of email programs, including Thunderbird, Outlook, OSX's Mail.app, and UMD Webmail. However, almost any email program, if properly configured, should allow you to work with your UMD email. Detailed instructions are available on our web site.

Encryption software

Encryption is the conversion of data into a form, called ciphertext, that cannot be easily understood by unauthorized people. Decryption is the process of converting encrypted data back into its original form, so it can be understood. There is a variety of encryption software available for common operating systems. OIT has put together a list with more detailed information.

Eraser

Eraser is a secure data removal tool for Windows. It completely removes sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.

Fetch is an easy-to-use, full-featured FTP and SFTP client for the Apple Macintosh.

Flash Professional CS4

Adobe Flash software is used to design and deliver low-bandwidth animations, presentations, and Web sites.

Ghost Solution Suite

Ghost Solution Suite provides high performance utilities for fast and safe system upgrading, backup, and recovery. Ghost writes disk images directly to popular CD-R/CD-RW drives, making it easy to back up your data.

iTunes

iTunes is a simple to use audio player for Macintosh and Windows computers. It supports a variety of media types, including AAC, MP3, and streaming audio. With this application you have the ability to purchase legal copies of songs at the iTunes Music Store, usually for as little as $0.99 apiece.

JMP joins statistics with graphics, in you are able to see your data from all angles and discover relationships and outliers that you may have missed.

Mathematica

Use Mathematica software for scientific research, engineering analysis and modeling, and technical education from high school to graduate school, and wherever quantitative methods are used. Under an individual license purchase, the Mathematica software can legally be installed on one work computer and one home computer as long as the software is not used at the same time on both computers. Faculty and staff only (no student license available at UMD.)

MATLAB integrates mathematical computing, visualization, and a powerful language to provide a flexible environment for technical computing.

Microsoft Software

The U of M Academic Computing (AC) negotiates reduced prices with Microsoft for popular Microsoft software products for department owned computers, faculty/staff owned computers, and student-owned computers.

Novell client

The Novell Office Server provides network file and print services to faculty and staff. Windows users will need a Novell client installed on their computer to log in to the Novell server.

Nvivo

NVivo is the qualitative software that combines subtle coding with the qualitative linking, shaping and modeling. A fine detailed analyzer, NVivo integrates the processes of interpretation, discovery and focused questioning.

PuTTY is an SSH and telnet client, which can be used to create a secure connection to a remote Unix-based server (such as ub).

Symantec Anti-virus

OIT has a license with Symantec Corp. to provide its AntiVirus® and Symantec Client Security® (SCS) software to eligible students, faculty, and staff of all campuses of the University of Minnesota.

The University has created a UTools list in the social bookmarking tool, Delicious, to help University faculty, staff, and students browse, explore, recommend, and choose free or low cost open-source software that supports teaching and learning.

VPN client (Cisco)

VPN lets you make a secure connection to a University computer from an off-campus, non-UMD connection (for example, cable or DSL modem). When you use UMD's VPN service, it makes your computer appear as though it is directly attached to UMDNet, and provides the same security and access to restricted resources that you have while on campus.

WinSCP

WinSCP is an open source, secure FTP (SFTP) client for transerring files to and from remote servers, such as the UMD web server.

WinZip

WinZip software "compresses" large files into smaller files for transfer over a network or for storage.

Xwin32

X-Win32 server software connects Windows PCs with UNIX servers including Sun Solaris, HP/UX, IBM AIX, SCO, FreeBSD, as well as Linux machines running Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake and other distributions of Linux. Your Xwin32 license will include the SSH add-on.
