Customizing the Mulberry 3 window

Mulberry 3 has a number of new features and capabilities. One of the nicer features is a 3-pane view which lets you combine your saved mailbox display, addressbooks, and the contents of your mailboxes into a single window. If you have never run Mulberry 1 or 2 on your email account you'll get this new 3-pane view automatically when you first run Mulberry 3. If you've used an earlier version of Mulberry then Mulberry 3 will display things in the separate windows you're familiar with and you'll need switch to the new 3-pane view.

IMPORTANT: You must apply secure settings to Mulberry before the end of 2006 or you will not be able to receive or send email with Mulberry. More information at http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/email/secure/

To make messages double-clickable in Separate Window mode

If you keep Mulberry 3 in the Separate Windows mode you'll find you can't double-click on messages to open them.
(The two steps below showing you how to fix this aren't necessary if you follow the other instructions on switching to the new "3-pane view".)

From the Windows menu choose Options.

Click on the two items at the bottom that say Double Click to put a check mark in the boxes. Then click OK.

Switching to 3-Pane view (Mulberry 1 & 2 users)

If you've used previous versions of Mulberry and run Mulberry 3 you'll find the display still in Separate Windows mode with the imap (mailbox list), INBOX, and addressbook windows all appearing withing the larger Mulberry window (below).

If you'd prefer the new 3-pane view, from the Windows menu choose Layout-> Use 3-pane Window.

Windows users: When you switch to the 3-pane view using Microsoft Windows your mailbox and Inbox windows will seem to disappear. They're actually within the narrow Mulberry window that's still at the top of the screen. Grab the bottom edge of this window with your mouse and drag it down to display the entire window contents.

Click on "INBOX" in your mailbox list to display the contents of your INBOX on the right.

Hiding the Preview pane

Some folks find the Preview pane at the lower right to not be very useful. It's too small to display much or your message and if you click or arrow key through your messages as each one displays in the Preview pane it will lose it's "unread" coloring in the mailbox listing if you have it selected for more than 3 seconds.

To hide the Preview pane (and make more room for displaying your mailbox list) from the Windows menu choose Hide Preview.

Cleaning up the 3-Pane window

In addition to removing the Preview pane you can also improve the Mulberry 3 window by deleting some of the uneeded columns in the Mail pane on the left and adjusting the widths of various parts of the window and the INBOX columns.

To clean up the Mail pane, hold down the Control key as you click on the icon on the column headers that come after the "Name:" column. Choose Delete Column from the pop-up menu (don't delete the "Name:" column).

Then drag the right-hand edge of the "Name:" column header box to the left to make that column narrower.

Drag the divider border between the Mail pane and INBOX display to the left to display just the "Name:" column. This will provide more room for your INBOX columns.

Grab the edges of the INBOX column header boxes to the left or right to make them wider or narrower.

A "cleaned up" Mulberry 3 window would look something like this (compare to the initial 3-pane view above).
