Opening PageMill and Setting Defaults

PageMill starts up like any other application. Use the method you like to start programs and open PageMill 3.x. You will be brought into PageMill's editor. In addition to the main editing window you will see a smaller window called the "Inspector." The "Inspector" allows for setting some of the characteristics of the page.

Before we get started adding content to the page, let's set some of the page's default preferences. This will allow any new page (not the current one) to have the same basic look (you can always change each page's look individually). Setting these preferences to the way you like will be a big time saver as you make new pages.

  1. Go to the "Edit" menu
  2. choose "Preferences"

A dialog window will pop up. If you're using the Windows version of PageMill you will have tabs to choose from. In the Mac OS version there are icon choices on the left side of the dialog window.

The first item to change is under the "General" choices.

  1. Set PageMill to "Open Pages In:" "Edit Mode"

The current value "Preview Mode" makes PageMill act like a Web browser. By changing this default to "Edit Mode" you can start working on a page immediately when you open PageMill. Normally, you're opening PageMill to work on a page so the program might as well be set up that way. If it opens in "Preview Mode" you can only look at the page like you would through your Web browser. This means you need to switch to "Edit Mode" to get some work done.

Next, choose the tab (Windows) or icon (Mac OS) for "Page."

  1. Change "Background Color:" to white

If you leave it at "Default" it will normally look gray in a Web browser. Choosing any color is fine, but to start out with we're going for black text on a white background. This gives good contrast for reading. The rest of the colors are fine set to "Default" for now. Remember that you may come back and change these settings so all new pages will have them.

Also notice that you may set a "background image." This allows you to have wallpaper in the background or any image you like. Before choosing a background image you may want to read about "Graphics on the Web" in the ITSS Web Developer's Guide.

These are all the preferences that need to be set for now. As you work with PageMill, you may want to change some of these settings. Until then, let's move on to "Adding and Changing Your Content Part I" and add some content!
