Adding and Changing Your Content Part 1
This is where the fun begins. To view a web page of the completed project
follow this link to the completed project page.
The main edit window of PageMill looks pretty much like a word processor so
we're going to treat it that way.
I know it's difficult to see the detail in the window to the right. I just
have it here so you know what I mean by the edit window.
Click in the text area towards the top of the window called "Title:" where
it says "Untitled Document."
- Name the document "[Your Name Here]'s Home Page"
This title shows up in the top of a Web browser and is also the name that will
appear in the bookmarks of the browser. This is why it's important to name your
page something meaningful in relation to its content.
Type these sentences into the editor:
This is my first web page so don't laugh too hard.
I'll be fixing it later so I can win some major awards.
But for now, this will have to do.
By the way, here's a link to the UMD Home Page.
Pretty impressive, huh?
Let's center the first sentence:
- Select (highlight) the first sentence
- Click on the "Center Align Text" button in the toolbar (looks similar to
a word processor button)
Let's take a moment to see a useful feature of many current software programs.
Move your mouse pointer over a tool in the toolbar and let it rest there for
a second or so. A pop-up window called a "tool tip" identifies the function
of the tool. Pretty neat payoff for having patience!
Now make a "Largest Heading" out of the same sentence:
- Select the sentence again if it's not selected
- Find the "Change Format" box (remember tool tips can help)
- Click on the "Change Format" box to get a drop down menu
- Choose "Largest Heading" from the choices available
If the font size looks too large, you can change that too!
- Select the sentence again if it's not selected
- Find the "Decrease Relative Font Size" box
- Click to make the font size smaller
Let's make an external (not part of our web site) link to the UMD home page:
- Select the text "link to the UMD Home Page"
- Click in the text entry window called "Link To:" at the bottom of the main
edit window
- Type in the url of UMD which is:
http://www.d.umn.edu/
- Hit the "enter" (Windows) or "return" (Mac OS) key
You now have a link!
Some bugs with PageMill and links:
- If you include end punctuation in the highlighted text for a link, PageMill
will extend this link to any subsequent text you type after the end punctuation.
Avoid using end punctuation in a link.
- If you make a link out of the last text on your page and then come back
to add text after that link, PageMill will extend the link. You'll need to
remove the link from the added text (highlight unwanted link text and look
under the "Edit" menu for "Remove Link").
If you're ready for more, move on to "Adding and Changing
Your Content Part II."
