Copy, Cut, and Paste

Copy, cut, and paste commands allow you to move, duplicate, or replace items efficiently without having to retype. You can usually find these commands in the Edit menu. These versatile functions work similarly in many different applications and often between applications.

To make a copy of an item:

A copy is stored in a separate location, often called the clipboard, which is not generally visible.

Cutting is similar to copying, except that the selected item is deleted from its original location, with a copy saved to the clipboard. To cut:

Paste inserts the item that is saved in the clipboard into the current application at the position of the cursor. Paste is generally used immediately following either a cut or a copy. To paste:

 

Exercise 2:

Within your word processor, create three short paragraphs of text. Use cut and paste (or copy and paste) to reverse the order of paragraph 2 and paragraph 3.

Exercise 3:

Using your document, copy a paragraph from a web page and insert it as the new paragraph 4 in the document.

Exercise 4:

Copy a paragraph from your word processor document and paste it into an email message to yourself. Close the word processor after copying the document to demonstrate that the copy remains even after the application is closed.
