Website Administration SettingsThis section gives an overview of each section of the website administration setup rather than walk you through how to do each piece in a step-wise fashion. Note: you can also do this step either in Dreamweaver MX 6.1 or Contribute. In Dreamweaver, you get to these settings by:
Sitewide SettingsAdministrator informationYou can change the administrator's email address and reset the administrator password here. Keep in mind that the administrator password does not need to match the file owner's x.500 password. RollbacksIn this section, you can choose whether or not rollbacks (i.e. the ability to revert to a previous version of a page) will be allowed and how many previous versions will be stored in the website. Previous versions are stored on the webserver in a folder labeled "_baks". This will add to the size of the website and hence its storage costs, although text files are fairly small. But this does allow the user to restore previous versions without having to contact ITSS staff to restore files from a backup tape. The preset number of rollbacks is 3. The range is from 1 to 99, if allowed. Advanced OptionsIndex and URL Mapping ...(why would anyone use this??) Remove AdministrationThis allows you to remove all of the Contribute site settings and permission groups without requiring that you manually edit the files on the webserver. Use this button if you decide that you do not want to use Contribute to administer the site. Permission GroupsThe permission groups allows you to set control levels for different groups of users so that you can tailor access to sections of your website. GeneralGroup description is seen if you allow users to create their own connections and choose what group to join. Group home page sets where users start when they access the website using Contribute. You can use this setting to help content creators of a large site get to a page in their section that they frequently will need to edit. Folder/File AccessUse this section to either allow users to edit files in any folder or to restrict users to certain folders in a large website. This can be very useful with some planning and help you divide site files into folders based upon whose responsibility they will be. You can also decide if you will allow users to delete files that they can edit and whether or not to remove previous versions of a file upon deletion of the current one (if you are using the rollback feature in the Sitewide Settings). EditingNon-template pagesThis section applies to pages that are not based on a template. You can allow unrestricted editing on a page, but may still choose to protect special items such as scripts (especially Javascript, if you use items such as rollovers), virtual includes, server-side includes, forms, and similar items from editing or deletion. You can also choose to restrict editing on a page to just text and text formatting. Paragraph spacingFor people who are not experienced with web-authoring tools, the number of lines inserted into a web page when the user types the "Enter" or "Return" key can be a source of frustration. In this section, you can determine for this particular group of users what the behavior will be: one line or two. Other editing optionsFour other options also allow you to control how some of the code is written in the background:
Styles and FontsIn Contribute, there are two main ways that users can format their text: using a drop-down list of styles or by selecting specific fonts and sizes. The administrator can decide what method(s) will be available to the users in each group, depending upon the abilities of the group and the need to maintain control of the look and feel of the site. New PagesWithin this section, you can determine how users in a particular group may create new pages. (What happens if you don't allow any of these methods?) New ImagesThis section allows you to control the maximum file size of any images included in webpages in this site. It can be an unlimited size, or you can strict to a certain number of kilobytes. |
