Cascading Style Sheets 101:
Introduction

- What are Cascading Style Sheets? What are some of the basics? This eClass will give you an introduction to the subject.
- Outcomes:
- Awareness what of cascading style sheets are.
- Awareness the pros and cons of using cascading style sheets.
- Understanding of the syntax and structure of CSS rules.
- Awareness of CSS font-family, font-size, color, and background-color properties.
- Awareness the five types of cascading style sheets.
- Ability to create a simple embedded and external style sheet.
- Awareness of the concepts of "cascading" and "inheritance".
- Ability to submit a page for W3C CSS validation.
- Target Audience: The intended audience is web designers, developers, and other technology professionals who are experienced coding HTML and who would like an introduction to some CSS basics.
- Prerequisites:
- University of Minnesota-Duluth faculty, staff or student.
- Basic computer skills. (Ability to use email, access the web, copy and paste, etc.)
- A "Graphical browser" installed (Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, and/or Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc.) on your computer.
- Experience and familiarity using the "Graphical browser(s)" above.(i.e. Knowledge of and ability to change browser preferences).
- Ability to save a web page and its images to your local computer.
- Experience in developing and publishing web materials.
- A text editor or a web editor with code view.
- Familiarity with and skills to use a web editor in code view or a text editor to hand code Hypertext Markup Language.
- Comfortable hand coding HTML markup.
- Ability to upload pages to the web. Participants must have a web space (ie ~tilde account) where they can post assignments.
- Time Commitment: A participant should plan to dedicate approximately four to six hours a week on this eClass. This will allow enough time to review the course content and readings, participate in online asynchronous discussion, and complete course activities and assignments.

- Completion Certificate: Participants who desire evidence of successful completion of our eClasses may apply for a certificate of completion that will be mailed at the end of the term. Application can be submitted after you successfully complete the class.
- Special Circumstances: We invite anyone who has a disability or special circumstances that might require adaptation of materials or special/different equipment to inform the instructor(s) ahead of time so that arrangements can be made.
