TechCenter Services and Fees

Data Services

The ITSS TechCenter can provide the following data backup, restore, transfer, recovery, and secure deletion services for University computers.

Service [ Rates ] University Computer Personal Computer
Data Backup and Transfer/Restore ITSS TechCenter can backup data files, email, address books, and Internet bookmarks/favorites and transfer the data to another computer or to external media (e.g. CDs, DVDs). The hard drive must be in working condition. There is a flat fee for this service. Not available
Data Recovery ITSS staff can attempt to recover University data that has been deleted or formatted, or exists on a failing or severely damaged hard drive. The condition of your hard drive determines if the data is recoverable.
When you bring your computer in for this service, there is a non-refundable assessment fee as staff investigate the data. If the data can be recovered, you will be billed at the regular hourly rate for any additional staff time.
If successful, ITSS will transfer your data to CDs, DVDs, flash drives, or external hard drives at your request.		 Not available
Secure Data Deletion
  • Hard Drives: ITSS has the tools to securely erase a hard drive from a computer, printer or other device in accordance with University standards. We provide a document that the work was completed. There is a flat fee for this service.
  • Media: ITSS can de-magnetize and/or shred tapes, CDs, DVDs, and others. There is no charge for this service for University items - drop then off at the TechCenter.
  • File Erasure: In many instances it is required to wipe a file from a computer that is still in production or used on a daily basis. For individually erasing single files permanently, Eraser is a free secure data removal tool. It completely removes sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. You can download a copy here: sourceforge.net.
