Data Procedures (2011-2012)

Data Backup | Data Recovery | Secure Data Deletion | Data Encryption

The ITSS TechCenter can provide the following data backup, restore, transfer, recovery, and secure deletion services.

Data Backup and Transfer/Restore [ Rates ]

ITSS TechCenter can backup data files, email, address books, and Internet bookmarks/favorites and transfer the data to another computer or to external media (e.g. CDs, DVDs). The hard drive must be in working condition. There is a flat fee for this service.

Data Recovery [ Rates ]

ITSS staff can attempt to recover deleted or formatted data, or attempt to recover data from a failing or severely damaged hard drive. The condition of your hard drive determines if the data is recoverable.

When you bring your computer in for this service, there is a non-refundable assessment fee as staff investigate the data. If the data can be recovered, you will be billed at the regular hourly rate for any additional staff time.

If successful, ITSS will transfer your data to CDs, DVDs, flash drives, or external hard drives at your request.

Secure Data Deletion [ Rates ]

Selling, donating or recyling your computer? Before you do so, make sure all non-public data has been securely deleted.

• Hard Drives: ITSS has the facilities to properly wipe data or securely erase a hard drive from a computer, printer or other device in accordance with University standards. We provide a certified document that the work was completed. There is a flat fee for this service.
• Media: ITSS has equipment to de-magnetize and/or shred tapes, CDs, DVDs, and others. There is no charge for this service for University items - drop then off at the TechCenter.
• File Erasure: In many instances it is required to wipe a file from a computer that is still in production or used on a daily basis. For individually erasing single files permanently, Eraser is a free secure data removal tool for Windows. It completely removes sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns. You can download a copy here: sourceforge.net.

Data Encryption: Hourly Rate

Data encryption is required for all University computers that store non-public data. There are a number of tools available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. Assistance with data encryption will be billed at our hourly rate. For more information, see: Encrypting Stored Data.
