Computer maintenance services are available for current UMD students, faculty, staff, and departments. Most TechCenter support services are charged based upon the amount of time a technician works on your computer. Any computer or device checked in for service is assessed a minimum charge of 1/2 hour at our current labor rate.
ITSS staff can provide or facilitate warranty repair service for Apple, HP and Dell computers. We are also authorized to provide warranty repairs covered by an extended CPS warranty purchased through the UMD Stores. For warranty repairs:
We will make our best effort to diagnose your machine and contact you within 3 business days of check-in, excluding University holidays and semester breaks. Most of our Technicians are students who work part-time, which allows us to provide service at competitive rates, but does mean we cannot guarantee a time frame for completion. University owned equipment is given priority over personal equipment.
To minimize the possibility of data loss, ITSS routinely creates a backup of customer data prior to beginning any repair work. The data is stored securely for up to 30 days and then deleted. We will bill for data recovery services only if data transfer or data recovery is requested as part of the service. ITSS assumes no responsibility for lost or corrupted software or data files and makes no guarantee that corrupted data can be recovered and/or restored.
Software programs (like MS Office) cannot be backed up and will need to be re-installed if the operating system (OS) is re-installed. Customers must provide their original media and product keys/licensing information.
After 45 days, unpaid invoices will be charged to the student account or billed externally through PeopleSoft. ITSS will ship the equipment at the customer's expense to the permanent address listed for the customer account. If no permanent address is available, after 180 days equipment is deemed abandoned and ITSS may securely wipe and recycle the equipment.
ITSS guarantees all hardware repairs for 90 days (labor) and the manufacturer's warranty period (parts). We are not able to guarantee software repairs such as spyware/malware removals.
