2 Creating your site : Using FTP to transfer files

Using FTP to transfer files to the web server

Many people find it easiest to develop their web pages on a personal computer using a text editor or one of the many web page editor programs now available (such as Dreamweaver). Once your files are ready to go, you'll need to tranfer them to the web server so the rest of the world can view them.

Transferring your completed web page files can be done in a variety of ways, usually using an ftp (File Transfer Protocol) utility.

Many web development programs (including Dreamweaver) have a built-in file transfer process. For details on how to transfer files using Dreamweaver, please see Let the World See Your Page.

If the program you use does not include file transfer capability, ITSS suggests one of the following:

  • If you are using a Macintosh, try Fetch. You can download Fetch from the ITSS Software.
  • If you are a Windows users, try WinSCP. You can download the software from the ITSS Software.
