Using WS-FTP at UMD
Assumptions:
- You have already created an HTML file and any associated files (i.e. graphics)
- These files have been saved to the hard drive of your PC.
- You have a UMD internet/email account.
- You have downloaded and installed WS_FTP.
- Launch WS_FTP: Once you have launched WS_FTP, you will see this following screen:

- Create a Session Profile:
Profile name: UMD WWW (or the name of your choice)
Host name: www.d.umn.edu
Host type: Automatic (default)
User ID: Your UMD Internet/email username - Select the "Save" button to save this profile for future use.
- Click the "OK" button to log on the web server. When prompted, enter your UMD Internet/email password. The WS-FTP Local/Remote window will be displayed as shown:
The left side of the window shows you everything locally -- (on the hard drive or a disk). The right side of the window shows you the remote files (what is up on the web server). - Change the Local Directory: In the Local System (left) window, double-click on [-c- ] to find the web files and folders you have stored on your hard drive.
- Change the Remote Directory: In the Remote System (right) window, double-click on the "www" directory; this is your personal (~jdoe0048) directory on the UMD web server. By default, most personal directories will have a file called "home.html."
- Select Files Locally: In the Local System (left) window, click on the file(s) you wish to post on the web.
- Send Files to the Server: Click on the Arrow button
pointing to the right. Your file(s) will appear in the Remote System (right) window, indicating they have been saved on the web server. - Open a web browser and type in your URL - you should see your web page!
