Kirby Leadership Institute
KLI students are encouraged to develop the understanding, commitment and confidence to lead fully informed
and actively engaged lives. So how do you do it?
To earn the UMD Leadership Certificate, students must complete at least 250 hours of community service.
Many on-campus volunteer positions can fulfill this requirement. Examples include:
- peer advisor
- SIT Rockstar
- admissions guide
- teaching assistant
- officer in a student organization
- residence hall assistant
- and more!
Email Joie Acheson Lee if you need more information on what types of service can be applied to your
KLI service requirement.
Want to reach beyond campus? Go for it! KLI encourages volunteering in the community. Whether you choose to
work in one of the area's excellent hospitals, schools, business or non-profits, KLI values your service in the
Twin Ports and beyond! Simply document your hours served on our website. Not sure where to find opportunities?

Did you know that any unpaid internship also can count toward service hours? For more information on
