kirby construction ahead

Frequently Asked Questions

So, what are you actually doing?

This project is part of a three-phase plan to completely renovate the first floor of Kirby Student Center. Phase 1 includes some important mechanical and safety upgrades, like asbestos abatement and updated heating and cooling systems. But the real change is to the Kirby Lounge. The brick wall is coming down! You can see exactly what we have planned on the Visuals page.

Is the hallway closing?

Over the summer, yes. But the main hallway will stay OPEN through Finals Week. But note that some members of the Kirby staff will be relocating to Griggs Center by April 17. The Info Desk will relocate to the Statesman office (across the hall from its current location) from April 22 through the end of finals, when it will move again to the Kirby Commons, outside the bookstore.

How long will the project take?

Phase 1 will begin mid-April and be finished before the start of the 2013 academic year. In other words, you can leave for the summer and come back to a whole new Kirby!
You can view all the important construction dates on this Google Calendar:

How is the project being funded?

Facilities Management and Kirby are teaming up to fund Phase 1. Part of your annual Student Service Fees go toward improvements in Kirby, into a fund that we've been using to save up for large renovations like this one. So, thank you!

Aren't you going to renovate the rest of the first floor?

We hope so, yes! Phases 2 and 3 are in the planning stages now, but implementing them depends on the responsible use of your Student Service Fees, along with creating responsible partnerships across campus to make sure that we do the best we can with what we have--for you!

Will the Underground reopen?

Yes! The Underground will reopen as lounge space at the completion of the project. We aren't sure yet if the entire space will reopen or if we will need to repurpose a portion of it, but there will definitely be Underground space for your hanging-out needs.
