managed information system
The MIS is a secure web application designed for faculty and staff in the Academic Support and Student Life unit to manage information using a single database. MIS is built and managed by the KMC staff to provide timely information for rapid strategic planning and management.
The primary features of MIS include:
GRIP
Graduation & Retention Improvement Project
What is GRIP?
GRIP is an intuitive solution for affectively organizing, compiling, and distributing relevant data and associated reports for UMD’s graduation and retention improvement efforts.
How is GRIP going to be accessed?
GRIP will be accessible by appropriate individuals with an X.500 account and a web browser. Data and reports are also to be exportable into multiple standard formats such as Adobe PDF, Microsoft Excel, as well as Comma Separated Values (CSV).
What data and which reports will be made available?
Data are stored in the VCASSL DataStore in five categories (Enterprise, Local, Graduation & Retention, Unit/Department, and User Generated) and will be displayed in the following real-time reports:
- On & Off Track Students
- 30-60-90 Reports
- Individual Off-Track & On-Track Students
- Off-Track by Major within Collegiate Units
- Individuals No Longer Enrolled
- Other Reports as Needed
DataStore
What is DataStore?
Like Data Warehouse or PeopleSoft’s HEPCOM, DataStore is a place to store and interact with data of all kinds. The data are used throughout Academic Support & Student Life from Career Services to Supportive Services Programs to Admissions – they all use applications that interact and use DataStore. DataStore has existed and functioned for a number of years – you probably just never knew it existed let a lone it had a name.
DataStore is simply not another Data Warehouse. If Data Warehouse is Sam’s Club or Costco, DataStore is like a General Store or corner market.
DataStore contains periodic snapshots of select tables from Data Warehouse and HEPCOM, but it also contains value-added data that is gathered and generated right here at UMD. This value-added data can fill in the holes that can exist by simply using enterprise data systems.
