The Resident Advisor experience offers the opportunity to develop personal leadership skills through helping other students. Assisting residents in building a positive living community requires genuine concern for others, an optimistic attitude, organizational skills, an honest appreciation of the differences in people, and a desire to make a difference.
A number of leadership characteristics are required to be and effective Resident Advisor. These characteristics include being flexible, responsible, committed to others, self-aware, willing to learn, and, above all, being a team player.
Resident Advisors receive a wide range of training including: conflict mediation, self-exploration, confrontation skills, decision-making, problem solving, and communications skills. They are also educated about the extensive on-campus resources available to students and how to make use of them.
As an outcome of being a Resident Advisor, RAs gain self-confidence,
self-knowledge, leadership skills, and understanding of the importance of a
team effort. Being a Resident Advisor is an outstanding, unique, and
unsurpassed opportunity.
