American College Testing (ACT) Scores

The ACT is a standardized test that provides information about you in four areas: English, Math, Science Reasoning, and Reading. A fifth "average" score is reported as a Composite score. The ACT is required for admission to UMD. UMD advisers will use your ACT scores to help them recommend appropriate placement into courses during at least your first year at UMD.

Advisers are also aware that the ACT is only one measure of your academic ability, so they will talk to you about what courses you have had in high school and how you performed in those classes. They may also ask you about various interests you have that will motivate you to do well in class as they help you build an appropriate schedule.

ACT will send you results of the exam, but if you have misplaced them, you can write for a duplicate copy of the report at

ACT Interest Inventory and Student Profile

As a part of the ACT Exam, each student is given an Assessment Student Report which contains an individualized profile. Your scores are linked to occupations and programs of study. These are grouped into "families" on a World-of-Work Map.

According to ACT, the World-Of-Work Map arranges Career Families (groups of sirnilar jobs) into 12 regions. The location of a Career Family shows how much it involves working with PEOPLE, THINGS, DATA, and IDEAS. Your location on the World-of-Work Map is based on the 90 activity preferences you reported on the ACT Interest Inventory.

ACT results are sent either directly to you or to you high school counselor. If you do not have your results, write to the address above (or call) and request a copy of this report. This info rmation can be very helpful if you are having trouble deciding on a major.

Be sure to record your results in your Portfolio section on Career Self Exploration.
