SPRING BREAK TRIP
March 15 - 22, 2008

You can make a difference this Spring Break

Questions/Answers
1. How much does it cost to spend the week in New Orelans?
The cost for the week is $350.00 payable in full before or on Friday, February 1, 2008. The $350.00 covers the travel costs and the camp fee. While at the camp you will be provided with meals. You will be responsible for the cost of meals on the trip down and the trip home (5-6). You will also be responsible for the meals during any outings in New Orleans (2). Any souvenirs and trinkets purchased will be your responsibility.

2. When do we leave and return?
We will leave UMD at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 15, 2008 and return to UMD on Saturday, March 22, 2008 during the late afternoon or early evening.

3. Where will we be staying in New Orleans?
We will be staying at a Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) camp by the name of Olive Tree which is in East New Orleans.

4. What do I bring with?
See the list on the New Orleans Information web page. Click here to see the list. You will have to scroll down to the middle of the page. While scrolling down the page please read the rest of the information on the page.

5. Do I need to bring tools?
Most of the tools are supplied by PDA. If you have some of your favorite tools, such as a hammer, tape measure, tool belt, etc. you may want to bring them. There may be other tools that we will recommend as it gets closer to the date of departure when we find out more specifics on what we will be working on. Check back closer to the date of departure.

6. What will the temperature be in New Orleans?
Last year the day time temperature was in the 70 to 80 degree F range. The night time temperature was in the 50 to 60 degree F range. This will likely be the temperature ranges this year also.

7. Will there be showers?
There will be showers and facilities for washing your hands, face, hair and shaving and brushing your teeth.

8. Will there be a facility to wash clothes?
There will be washers and driers. There will only be one or two of each so you may want to pool clothes with other students when you wash and dry them so that all the clothes can get cleaned. You will be responsible for doing the washing and drying. The washers and driers will only be available for use during the evenings after we return from work.

9. I have a friend that would like to come who is not a UMD student, can this person come?
Everyone is welcome to come. This trip is open to UMD, UWS, Lake Superior College and St. Scholastica students as well as residents of Duluth and surrounding communities.

10. I would like to drive down myself and meet you at the camp. Is this possible?
No, this is not possible. We feel that everyone going as a group is part of the experience for the week. There will also be liability issues if you drive down yourself. We are willing to help you get connected with other organizations in New Orleans who are looking for volunteers to provide assistance to the residents of New Orleans during spring break.

11. I have a friend who lives in Illinois who would like to join us for the week. Can this friend meet the bus at a designated area in Illinois?     OR     I want to meet the bus in Wisconsin, because I want to go home to get some items for the trip. Can you pick me up along Highway 53 at a designated area?
We would like everyone to board the bus at UMD in Duluth. We do not want to be stopping several times down and back to pick up/leave off people. If we allow a pickup for one person, there will be several others who will want to be picked up/left off. This can become a coordination nightmare.

12. Who do I make my registration fee check out to?
The check for the registration fee of $350.00 should be made out to United Campus Ministry. On the Memo line put New Orleans Trip. The registration fee is non-refundable.

13. Where do I send my check and registration materials?
The check and the registration material (three forms) can be sent or brought to Monte Gomke, UMD Housing & Residence Life, Lake Superior Hall 149, 513 Niagara Court, Duluth MN 55812-3046 by February 1, 2008 to confirm a space for the trip.
