Information meetings November 13 - Montague 70 at 7:00 PM
November 14 - Montague 70 at 7:00 PM
Registration Fee - $350.00 Payment in full by Friday, February 1, 2008
The check should be made out to United Campus Ministry. On the Memo line put New Orleans Trip. The registration fee is non-refundable.

The check and the registration material (three forms) can be sent or brought to Monte Gomke, UMD Housing & Residence Life, Lake Superior Hall 149, 513 Niagara Court, Duluth MN 55812-3046

Orientation Session 1
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 or February 20, 2008

Sessions begin at 7:00 PM and last approximately one hour. The orientation sessions will be held in UMD Montague Hall 70
  • Geography, history, demographics, and socioeconomics of the area
  • Causes of the devastation: National/regional decisisons and politics, natural occurances, poverty, disparity, contractor availability, home insurance policies, etc.
  • Areas affected and hardest hit/impacted
  • What causes poverty? Despair?
  • Personal motivations for involvement

Orientation Session 2
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 or February 27, 2008

Sessions begin at 7:00 PM and last approximately one hour. The orientation sessions will be held in UMD Montague Hall 70
  • Cultural and personal sensitivity
  • Appropriate conduct when assisting
  • Expectations: Group (not self), in camp, in freetime, alcohol
  • Camp orientation: Set-up, responsibilities to camp/group, lights out
  • Schedule orientation:
        Itinerary (including evening events and activities,
        seeing the area).
        A typical day (wake up, meals, work, camp
        responsibilities, evenings, lights out).

Tuesday, March 4, 2008 or March 5, 2008

Sessions begin at 7:00 PM and last approximately one hour. The orientation sessions will be held in UMD Montague Hall 70
  • Travel plan (to New Orleans, in New Orleans)
  • Travel expectations: Packing (amount), what to/not to bring, rest stop intervals
  • Work sight orientation
  • Length of day and type of work (physical effort)
  • Tool orientation: What it is, how to use it
  • Personal information and privacy
  • The home/property owners
  • The camp staff
  • Last minute questions
