The oldest printed book in the Ramseyer Collection is this copy of the Opuscula of Thomas Aquinas. It was published in 1490 by Hermann Lichtenstein in Venice and thus appeared within thirty years or so of the invention of printing with moveable type. The paper on which early works were printed was much more durable than most of the paper produced today, which deteriorates rapidly because of the chemicals used in its manufacture. This book will outlast most of today's stock at Barnes and Noble.
