Chinese (Chu Yin Phonetic)

Chinese is normally written in ideographic characters, but in 1919 a phonetic system was devised for the Mandarin or Kuoyü (Guo hua) dialect.  This is used in schools and alongside characters to indicate the pronunciation in Kuoyü.  Displayed is the Gospel of John, published in Shanghai in 1919.
