RefWorks is a web-based bibliographic management service. You can retrieve or add citations anywhere you have online access to a computer. For help, see RefWorks Info.
Databases for Locating Journal Citations
Use an index to locate citations to journal articles. Most of the the indexes are available online and some of them have the full-text article.
- ERIC (CSA)
Covers all aspects of education including both journal articles (EJ) and documents (ED). For help in finding descriptors (subject headings), click on the Search Tools tab and then on the Thesaurus tab. Use the History/Combine Searches tab to combine subject headings. Many ERIC documents are available free online from 1996 to present. ERIC ED documents from 1966 - 2003 are available in the third floor microform area if availability was MF01. If availability is "Document Not Available from EDRS," check the library catalog.
- Education Fulltext (Wilson)
Index to all aspects of education and is often more current than ERIC for journal articles. Approximately 254 of the 532 journals are full-text within this database.
- Family & Society Studies Worldwide (EBSCO)
This database covers research in the fields of family science, human ecology, human development and social welfare. This databases includes journal articles, conference papers, books, government reports, disserations, statistical sources, etc.
- Google Scholar -- UMD Students, Faculty & Staff
Locate and access peer-reviewed journal articles and other scholarly sources. This campus version provides full text access to e-journals subscribed to by the University of Minnesota Duluth Library.
- Kraus Curriculum Development Library
Provides access to educational curriculum information PreK-12 and adult basic education. Many resources are available full-text online. The library has the 16th - 18th, 1997-1999 on microfiche.
- Physical Education Index (CSA)
Covers all aspects of physical education including sports medicine; kinesiology; motor learning; recreation; health education; coaching and training; sport psychology and sport sociology.
- PsycINFO (CSA)
Indexes more than 1,932 journals on psychology, psychiatry, sociology, education, linguistics and physiology. The database indexes journal articles from 1887 to present and book/book chapters from 1987 to present.
- PubMed -- UMD Students, Staff & Faculty
Index to articles on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and health care. This campus version provides full text access to e-journals subscribed to by the University of Minnesota Duluth Library.
- Web of Science (ISI/Thomson)
Online versions of ISI's citation indexes--Science Citation Index, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index.
Finding Journal Articles
Some databases have the full-text article available within the database and you need to look no further for the article. If the article is not available full-text, the following steps can be taken to receive the article.
- Find It
In some of the databases when looking at a citation, you will see a "Find It" icon. When clicking on this icon, you will receive either a link to the full-text article or follow the next step and click on ""Search for print or microfilm in the UMD Library Catalog." If found, click on the availability link. If still not located, click on "Request document via UMD Interlibrary Loan" and we will get the item from another library.

- E-Journal Locator
Use this resource to see if a database owned by UMD has the journal article available full-text.
- Journal Catalog
Use the Journal Catalog to see if the UMD has the journal available in paper or microform. Current paper journals 2000 to present are shelved on the third floor near the green reading room and older journals are in the annex. Microfilm holdings are located on the third floor.
- Interlibrary Loan (Journal Articles)
When UMD does not have the journal article you need, use the Interlibrary Loan to request the article from another library. Click on "Article/Chapter" and you will receive an network password form. Type in your UMD user name and password and click OK. It takes a minumin of 10 business days. After at least 10 working days, you can request a status check on your request (you must have citation information and date of original request). Print journal articles are mailed to you and online journal articles are sent via your UMD e-mail.
Finding Books
Use the UMD Library to locate books, periodicals, and multimedia. Additional library catalogs are provided to locate materials not owned by UMD. You can receive books and journals articles from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan.
- UMD Library Catalog
Use for locating materials owned by the UMD Library. You can renew items checked out through the UMD Library catalog. Click on " My Account." At "Internet Login," type in your Internet ID and password. Click on "Checked Out." To renew a single item or see other details about an item click on the underlined number. Click on "Renew." Make sure item was renewed. Logout of your account.
- Other Library Catalogs
Provides links to MnLINK (the Minnesota's state library catalog), College of St. Scholastic, University of Wisconsin Superior and other library catalogs.
- WorldCat
A database of materials cataloged by libraries using the OCLC catalog system. If UMD does not own the item, click on the ILL icon to request the item through Interlibrary Loan. Be sure to include the date needed by.
- Interlibrary Loan (Book/Media)
Use this service for books not owned by the UMD Library. Click on "Book/Media" and you will receive a network password form. Type in your UMD user name and password and click [OK]. After at least 10 working days, you can request a status check on your request (you must have citation information and date of original request). Be sure to allow plenty of time. A email or postcard will notify you when the item comes in. You can pick it up at the circulation desk.
Teaching Materials
Our teaching materials collection contains materials for teachers from preschool through high school.
Children's Literature
Our children's literature collection includes fiction and nonfiction books for preschool to age 13, including Caldecott and Newbery honor and medal books.
APA Style Manual
The Education Department uses the "Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association" to help write papers and show you how to cite materials. The library has copies of this style manual at the Reference Desk and also on Reserve for two hour checkout from the Reserve desk.

Style guides for APA, MLA, and Turabian developed by the USM (University of Southern Mississippi) Libraries. This has a APA online tutorial and examples for in-text citations and reference list.
Distance Education Services
To qualify for library services as a Distance Learner you must be: - Enrolled in courses at UMD
- Live outside a fifty-mile radius of UMD
As a Distance Learner you are eligible to have library materials shipped to your home. The Library pays for shipping to you; you are responsible for the cost of return shipping. You must fill out the Library Distance Education Registration Form and be approved. This form must be filled out at the beginning of each academic year. Your UMD e-mail account is the University's and the Library's official means of contacting you.

- Connect From Off Campus
When off-campus, most online databases and reserve items are not accessible if you do not authenticate. You can authenticate by using the EZproxy server, virtual private network (VPN) or UMD Internet software. When you click on a link to one of the library's restricted resources you will be asked to enter your UMD username and password. Your user name is your internet ID and the password that goes with it. When clicking on a UMD subscription database, you will see the (UMD EZproxy server login screen) is clearly marked with the University logo.
