ABSTRACT SUMMARY OF COLLECTION

The Aftenro Society was organized in 1908 by a group of Norwegian women to raise money for the construction of a good Christian old people’s home. Their first building was opened in 1921 with 30 residents and was named for the Norwegian word meaning “Evening’s Rest” (Aftenro). The Aftenro home presently continues its function as a home for the aged, in its location at 1423 N. 19th Ave. East.

The collection includes minutes of the Aftenro Society, 1910-1973, with the years 1910-1920 written in Norwegian; historical logs consisting of daily accounts of occurrences at the Aftenro Home; scrapbooks, containing newspaper clippings, photos, correspondence and constitution, articles of incorporation and bylaws 1911-1977; correspondence; annual reports; and photos. It also includes one tape cassette done by Mrs. Arnold Berg, Aftenro historian, wherein she recounts the history of Aftenro Society.
