ABSTRACT SUMMARY OF COLLECTION

The Duluth chapter of the American Red Cross was formed in 1915 in response to needs created by World War I. In 1942, the organization changed its name to the Arrowhead Chapter and is presently known as the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The collection contains correspondence, reference materials, , photographs, and Red Cross publications. Most of the material originated from the chapter's World War I activities, and reflects the relief programs in effect during that war. The correspondence largely concerns Mrs. J. R. McGiffert, who headed the French relief committee, and Julia E. L. Moore, who was the general secretary of the chapter in 1917. The collection also includes early photographs of the chapter's activities, World War I military service records of St. Louis County women compiled by Minnesota War Records Commission, a scrapbook of World War II activities and (1917-1963).

Related material may be found in collection S3005, Minnesota War Records Commission, St. Louis County Branch.
