The Kerlan Award is given "in recognition of singular attainments in the creation of children's literature and in appreciation for generous donation of unique resources to the Kerlan Collection for the study of children's literature." The books listed below are owned by the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Library.
Dr. Irvin Kelan was chief of medical research for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C. He collected children's books including what was best for the current year as well as children's classics and Newbery winners. In 1949, he stated donating his collection to the University of Minnesota. This was the start of the Kerlan Collection.
