E-Journal Locator Directions

**Note:  If you want to do a topic or subject search for articles, the E-Journal Locator is not the place to start.  Instead, go to the Databases by Subject page.

Information

Use the E-Journal Locator to find electronic journals to which the UMD Library subscribes.  Journals, newspapers and magazines available through full-text databases and selected free access journals are also included in this list.  There are two search options:  by journal title and by citation to an article.

A Title Search (journal title) will indicate whether or not the UMD Library has the journal full-text online.   If it does, the E-Journal Locator will indicate the years of coverage and provide links to the full-text versions available.

A CitationLinker Search (citations for articles) can often link directly to the article you seek.  More information needs to be entered for this approach  -  the journal title, volume, date, and starting page of the article.

Directions for using the E-Journal Locator Title Search

1.  Enter the title of the journal, magazine, or newspaper.

2.  Select the search option and click on search.*

3.  When the title comes up, notice the dates of coverage for each version.  Select one that includes the date frames of the article you want.  Click again on the Linking Service Window.  From the Linking Service Window there are two options.

            a.  Option 1:  Click on the title of the journal.  This will take you to the journal page.  Use the options presented to find the article – year, volume number, issue number, and starting page.

            b.  Option 2:  Fill in the year, volume, issue, and start page (or as many of those as you have) and click on Go.

Look over the results for the article and you should a full citation and a link to either a .pdf or .html version of the article.

4.  If the title you want is not in the E-Journal Locator or if the dates you want are not available full-text online, the next step is to check the Journals Catalog to find out if the library has a print copy (microfilm or paper).

6.  If the title you want is not in the E-Journal Locator and the library does not have a print title or the dates you need, then you can submit an Interlibrary Loan request.  (If the article is available through Interlibrary Loan, it will be delivered to you by email, normally as a pdf or html document.  In rare situations, it will be mailed to you in paper format.  Interlibrary Loan takes approximately two weeks.

*The default is set for “Title starts with.”  There are two other options.  If you know the exact title, you may use that one.  If you remember some of the words in the journal, magazine, of newspaper title but are not sure of their order, use the “Title contains” option

Directions for a CitationLinker Search

1.  Click on CitationLinker

2.  Enter the title of the journal

3.  Add as much as you know of the date, with year being most important

4.  Add volume number and start page (issue number is helpful when you have it).  Do not enter article title, author, ISSN, PMID, or DOI.

5.  Typically you will get a direct link to the article; sometimes you will get a table of contents for the issue and need to search for the pages, and occasionally you will get a link only to the journal and will need to do an additional search on that site.
