Dictionnaire de l'Académie française, neuvième édition - Version informatisée
This is the great, authoritative edition of the French language, via a well-designed electronic interface.

Ressources Internet Francophone
A nice, broad collection of French internet resources compiled at Lehman College, City University of New York.

Gallica (Bibliothèque nationale de France)
Gallica propose un accès à 70 000 ouvrages numérisés, à plus de 80 000 images et à plusieurs dizaines d'heures de ressources sonores. Cet ensemble constitue l'une des plus importantes bibliothèques numériques accessibles gratuitement sur l'Internet. Les fonds de Gallica sont extraits de la bibliothèque numérique de la BnF. Ils ont été choisis de manière à dessiner une bibliothèque patrimoniale et encyclopédique. Cette collection rassemble des éditions prestigieuses, dictionnaires et périodiques. Elle concerne de nombreuses disciplines telles l'histoire, la littérature, les sciences, la philosophie, le droit, l'économie ou les sciences politiques.

ARTFL Project
At present the database consists of nearly 2000 texts, ranging from classic works of French literature to various kinds of non-fiction prose and technical writing. The eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries are about equally represented, with a smaller selection of seventeenth century texts as well as some medieval and Renaissance texts.

Where to go in the Library if you want to browse...

Browsing the library stacks can be a great way to make new discoveries.

The UMD library is organized according to the Library of Congress Classification System, which uses alphabetic codes to divide the collection by subject.  The "D" class is where European History and Culture is located, with French History and Culture in subclass "DC."  French Colonial America (mainly Quebec, but also parts of the Caribbean) is found in F 1170.  History of other French colonial areas can be found in the history sections for Asia (subclass DS) and Africa (subclass DT).  Those books are all located on the 3rd floor of the library.   The "P" class is devoted to Language and Literature, and those books are on the 4th floor.
