Where to go in the Library if you want to browse

Browsing the library stacks can be a great way to make new discoveries.

The UMD library is organized according to the Library of Congress Classification System, which uses alphabetic codes to divide the collection by subject.  The "D" class is where European History is located (with German History in "DD"), and those books are located on the 3rd floor of the library.   The "P" class is devoted to Language and Literature, and those books are on the 4th floor.

DD is the call number range for German History.

PF 3001 to PF5999 has books on the German language. Within that range,

PF 3801 to PF 3991 : Old High German
PF 3992 to PF 4010 : Old Saxon
PF 4043 to PF 4350 : Middle High German
PF 4501 to PF 4596 : Early Modern German
PF 5000 to PF 5951 : German dialects, provincialisms, etc.
PF 5971 to PF 5999 : German slang, argot, etc.

PT 1 to PT 4897 has books on German Literature.  Within that range,

PT 1 to PT 80 has books on German literary history and criticism
PT 83 to PT 873 has books on the history of German literature, subdivided into

PT 175 to PT 230 : Medieval
PT 236 to PT 405 : Modern
PT 500 to PT 597 : Poetry
PT 605 to PT 709 : Drama
PT 711 to PT 871 : Prose

PT 881 to PT 951 has books on German folk literature
PT 1100 to PT 1479 has collections of literature, subdivided into

PT 1100 to PT 1141 : General
PT 1151 to PT 1241 : Poetry
PT 1251 to PT 1299 : Drama
PT 1301 to PT 1360 : Prose
PT 1371 to PT 1374 : Early to 1950.  Old and Middle High German.
PT 1375 to PT 1479 : Middle High German

PT 1501 to PT 2688 has individuals works and collections by individual authors, subdivided into

PT 1501 to PT 1695 : Middle High German, ca. 1050-1450/1500
PT 1701 to PT 1797 : 1500-ca. 1700
PT 1799 to PT 2592 : 1700-ca. 1860/70 (incl. Goethe btwn. PT 1891 & PT 2239)
PT 2600 to PT 2688 : 1860/70 - 1960
PT 2660 to PT 2688 : 1961 - 2000
PT 2700 to PT 2728 : 2001 -

PT 3701 to PT 3971 has provincial, local, & colonial works, incl. East German works
PT 4801 to PT 4897 has Low German literature

In the Reference section, on the 2nd floor, the call numbers work the same way, except that they all begin "REF."
