Where to go in the library if you want to browse

Browsing the stacks can be a great way to make discoveries in your areas of interest.

The philosophy books are mostly in the B class of our cataloging system (along with psychology and religion), so they are found on the third floor.  However, since every subject has philosophical questions underlying it, there are philosophy books throughout the stacks.  For example, books on language are in the P range (P-PZ), and the books on the philosophy of language are found in P101-P410, near the beginning of that range.

In the B class, general philosophy is from B1 to B5739, roughly in order of historical period.  The BD's have speculative philosophy, including general works, metaphysics, epistemology, methodology, ontology, and cosmology, in that order.  The BH's have books on aesthetics (though books on aesthetics can also be found near the beginning of the N's, the classification for Art).  BJ is where works on ethics are found, followed by world religions throughout the rest of the B class.

Books on social theory and political philosophy are generally located in the H, HM, HX and JC areas, in the classifications for social sciences and political science.  The H's are on the third floor of the library and the J's are on the fourth floor.

These codes (B, BD, JC, etc.) are examples of classes in the Library of Congress Classification System, which is used in our library.  The reference section follows the same rules, so for reference books you can use the same classification codes to browse.  These are on the second floor, behind the reference desk.

The Philosophic Community

The Minnesota Philosophical Society
"The Minnesota Philosophical Society is an Organization devoted to advancing Philosophy's unending quest for knowldge. It is made up of philosophers living in Minnesota and the Midwest who are both affiliated and unaffiliated with departments of philosophy in instituions of higher learning."

The American Philosophical Association
"The American Philosophical Association is the main professional organization for philosophers in the United States. Founded in 1900, its mission is to promote the exchange of ideas among philosophers, to encourage creative and scholarly activity in philosophy, to facilitate the professional work and teaching of philosophers, and to represent philosophy as a discipline."
