RefWorks  is a web-based bibliographic management tool. With this tool you can collect and organize references on topics for papers or research; electronically transfer references from databases to your files; create bibliographies or lists of works cited using the citation format of your choice; create in-text references or footnotes as you write papers; and create your personal searchable database of citations.

Once you have signed up, you may access your RefWorks account any time you have a connection to the Library website. There are a few situations in which this does not work in which case you will need to use the UMD GroupCode for RefWorks.

For directions on how to move references from UMD Databases and Library Catalog to your RefWorks account see:

Importing References into RefWorks by Database.

For First Time Users:

Connect to RefWorks from this page or use one of the links from the Library website to RefWorks Direct and create an account for yourself.

Click on "sign up for an individual account." Make up a user name and password (do not use your UMD password); fill in the requested information - where an email is required be sure to use your UMD email address.  Once the account is created you will receive immediate access to RefWorks. You will also receive confirmation in an email.  Once you have set up your account you can access it as long as you go through the the library website.

See the RefWorks Quick Start Guide, use the online RefWorks Tutorials. There is also a good Help feature in RefWorks.
