How to Connect From Off Campus:
UMD Library IP-Authenticated Services
Purpose:
The UMD Library makes available a variety of online research tools. Due to licensing agreements their use is generally restricted to current UMD students, faculty, and staff. Electronic documents placed on Course Reserve are also restricted. If you select one of the options below to connect from off campus these licensed resources will be available.
Option 1. The UMD EZproxy server
Use your regular internet service provider to connect to the library web pages. When you click on a link to one of the library's restricted resources you will be asked to enter your username and password. Your user name is your internet ID and the password that goes with it. Please note that many of the database providers have login screens - the UMD EZproxy server login screen is clearly marked with the University logo. Troubleshooting tips for the EZproxy server.
Option 2. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to UMD
If you connect to the Internet through Internet Service Providers other than UMD, it is possible to add UMD's VPN software to your computer. Here are instructions for installing VPN on your computer.
Once you have installed the VPN software you can turn it on when you need it, and turn it off when you don't. VPN software causes your Internet communications to be routed through UMD. Communication between your computer and UMD is encrypted. Troubleshooting tips for VPN.
Most of the library's licensed resources will also require you to log on to the UMD Ezproxy server after you click on a link to the resource. Your user name is your internet ID and the password that goes with it. Please note that many of the database providers have login screens - the UMD EZproxy server login screen is clearly marked with the University logo.
