Electronic Reserve Copyright Information

The information below is a summary of the Electronic Reserve section of the Library Copyright Policy.

  • Duplications from copyrighted materials are placed on reserve at the request of UMD faculty or staff.
  • Duplications from Library owned materials will be placed on reserve.
  • Duplications from materials not owned by the Library will be placed on reserve if the requester determines the use to be fair use based on the Fair Use Worksheet. (You are encouraged to retain the worksheet for your records.)
  • Duplications determined not to be fair use by the requester will require:
    • a purchase of the original by the library - contact the Subject Librarian to request a purchase
    • permission from the copyright holder - the book or journals copyright statement may grant permission
    • or payment of copyright fees - Reserve Processing staff will assist in obtaining copyright permission and/or arranging for the payment of copyright fees.

Reserve Processing staff, acting in the best interest of the Library, reserve the right to refuse a processing request if, in their judgment, fulfillment of the request would involve violation of copyright law.

Please advise any students taking an incomplete to download or print all required electronic reserve readings prior to the end of the term. The files are deleted as soon as time permits after the end of the semester you indicated on the Reserve Processing Form.
