Course Reserve Processing

General Information

Course Reserve is a library service to you and your students, providing access to assigned materials that supplement the textbooks and lectures.

What we do for you -

  • Photocopy and scan materials for electronic reserve and post them online. (Access is limited to UMD students, faculty and staff from off campus and to on campus users.)
  • Pull library owned books, videos or journals from the library shelves and add the titles to the list of materials for your class

What you can be put on reserve -

  • Electronic reserve materials.
    • Duplications from library owned materials.
    • Duplications from materials not owned by the Library if you determine the use to be fair. A fair use worksheet is available for your use at http://www.d.umn.edu/lib/copyright/fair.htm.
    • Duplications from materials in the public domain or from a US Government work.
    • Copies of chapters or articles from Interlibrary Loan items if you determine the use to be fair. A fair use worksheet is available for your use at http://www.d.umn.edu/lib/copyright/fair.htm.
  • Library owned books, videos or journals.
  • Personal copies of books, videos or journals. (See the Library policy for placing personal copies on reserve.)
  • Your lecture notes and exams.
  • Recordings from broadcast tv for 10 school days following the broadcast.

What you cannot put on Reserve -

  • Recordings from a subscription service (HBO, Showtime, etc.).
  • Rented videos or DVDs.
  • Materials received through Interlibrary Loan. Note: Chapters from books and articles from journals received through ILL can be put on reserve if you determine the use to be fair. A fair use worksheet is available for your use at http://www.d.umn.edu/lib/copyright/fair.htm.

Submitting Reserve Requests:

  • Please submit your requests at least 3 weekdays prior to making assignments from the reserve material.
  • Reserve processing requests may be submitted:
    • in person at the Reserve & Media Circulation Desk,
    • using an online form,
    • as an e-mail attachment for Word, Word Perfect, text or pdf documents.
  • Requests are processed as quickly as possible and are prioritized by the "Needed by Date" on the Processing Form. You will receive an e-mail notification when the items are on reserve (provided you supply an e-mail address).
  • When providing photocopies, please avoid landscape mode copies with multiple pages per sheet and ensure a minimal margin of ½ inch for the best quality online image or allow us to photocopy electronic reserve items.

How many copies of materials are needed?

  • Generally 1 copy per 15 to 20 students is sufficient. This will vary with the amount of time the students have to complete the assigned reading/viewing.
  • Only one copy is required for electronic reserve items since they are scanned and made available online access is restricted to UMD Faculty, Students and Staff).>

RUSH Requests -

  • To speed up the processing for rush requests please:
  • Pull library books and journals from the shelves and submit them with your request form.
  • Provide a clean photocopy for electronic reserve items.
  • Submit your exams or lecture notes as an e-mail attachment

Taking items off Reserve -

  • Reserve materials are removed from reserve and personal copies returned to you as soon as time permits after the expiration date you indicated on the Processing Request form.
  • Please advise students taking an incomplete to download or print required electronic reserve readings prior to the end of the term. Electronic reserve files are deleted from the server as soon as time permits after the expiration date you indication on the processing request form.
  • You may remove items from reserve earlier than you originally indicated by submitting an Off Reserve Processing Request Form.
