1. What can I place on reserve?
Books, journals videos, audiocassettes from the Library Collection as well as your personal copies can be placed on reserve. Your lecture notes and exams can be placed on reserve. Duplications from books or journals may be placed on either electronic or paper reserve. Please note that materials that do not require copyright clearance will be placed on electronic reserve. One copy only of a duplication requiring copyright clearance will be placed on paper reserve when the " needed by " date does not allow sufficient time to seek copyright clearance for electronic reserve, instead permission will be sought for paper reserves (usually a much faster turnaround time)
2. If I put my exams and lecture notes on electronic reserve are they available on the web?
No and Yes - the materials on electronic reserve are available online, but access is restricted to UMD Students, Faculty and Staff.
3. How long should I allow for reserve items to be processed and available to my students?
Generally it is helpful to allow at least three weekdays to process items. The actual time needed varies by the time of the semester and how many other faculty are also submitting requests. You will receive an e-mail notification when the material is available (assuming you have provided an e-mail address on the Reserve Processing Form).
A S A P or Rush requests:You may submit processing request with a " needed by date " of ASAP. Items submitted in the morning are often processed day it is received, however during peak processing times (the beginning of each semester) that may not be possible.
You can speed up the A S A P processing by doing the following:
- Pull library books and journals from the shelves and submit them with your request form. (For non ASAP requests, submit the list of items and we will pull the items or submit a Reserve Processing Request online.)
- If possible use photocopies from items that do not require copyright clearance, such as Government documents or articles/chapters from journals or books that give permission for use in the copyright statement. Use articles/chapters that are fair use as you determine by completing the Fair Use Worksheet.
- Provide a clean photocopy and a full source citation, title page and copyright page for photocopies of copyrighted materials. (For non ASAP requests we will do the photocopying for you if you have the original. We can minimize the amount of " cleaning " time required for scanned pages when we do the photocopying.)
- Submit your exams or lecture notes as an attachment to an e-mail sent to reserve@d.umn.edu. We can convert Word, Word Perfect or .txt documents to the .pdf format. Documents already in the .pdf format can also be sent as attachments.
4. Do I need to pull the books/journals off the shelves or will someone do that for me?
Reserve staff will pull materials from the shelves for you, please provide a list of the items you would like pulled. You may also submit your request online. Complete a Reserve Processing Form and click the submit button. Tip: It may be helpful to open a second navigator window and copy/paste the information from the online catalog to the form.
5. What if I want just a chapter from a book put on reserve, not the whole book?
Fair use is always a consideration, please read the copyright information carefully and complete the Fair Use Worksheet to determine if the use is " Fair " . After determining the use is "fair" then the chapter or chapters can be placed on electronic reserve.
6. What if I want an article from a journal copied and put on reserve?
Fair use is always a consideration, please read the copyright information carefully and complete the Fair Use Worksheet to determine if the use is " Fair ". After determining the use is "fair" then the chapter or chapters can be placed on electronic reserve.
7. Can I put a copy of an article I received through ILL on reserve?
It depends - Fair use is always a consideration in accepting copies of items for reserve. Please read the copyright information. Generally, you can use a duplication from a book/journal issue for one semester, any additional semesters may require permission from the copyright owner.
8. How many copies should I put on reserve?
For books, the number will depend on how many students in your class and how long they have to do the assignment. Generally one copy for every 15-20 students is adequate.
For exams, lecture notes, a chapter from a book or article from a journal, you will need only one copy since we make the item available online so it can be accessed by multiple students at the same time. Only one copy of an item requiring copyright clearance with a " needed by " that that does not allow time to seek permission for electronic reserve will be placed on paper reserve.
9. What if the library doesn't own a book that I want on reserve and I don't want to put my copy on reserve?
You may recommend that the library purchase the book for our collection by contacting your Subject Area Librarian.
10. Can I put a book or journal on reserve that I received through ILL?
You may place on electronic reserve selected chapters from a book or articles from a journal you received through ILL but not the entire volume or book. Interlibrary loan materials are lent with the understanding that they will be used by one person. You may recommend that the library purchase the book for our collection by contacting your Subject Area Librarian.
