Reference Librarians are available to assist you to:
- Find information needed for research, study, or personal use
- Locate journal articles
- Select databases and indexes for your research
- Formulate research strategies
- Refine research topics
- Answer specific informational questions
- Search the UMD Library Catalog
- Effectively search the Internet
- Identify library subject specialists when needed
Reference services are available several ways:
Online through IM Reference or E-mail Reference
Ask a Librarian (E-mail)
The UMD Library's e-mail reference service is best used for getting answers to brief, factual questions; questions about which resources are best to use; and /or questions about UMD. This service is available to UMD students, faculty, staff, Northeast Minnesota residents, and those requesting information unique to UMD. You will get a response within 24 hours during normal working days, usually much sooner..
IM Reference
Available the same hours as the Reference DeskReference Desk, 2nd Floor
The reference area contains a service desk staffed by librarians and an extensive refrence collection. Computer workstations are available for users to obtain assistance using the library catalog, indexes and databases, and accessing other Internet based resources. The Periodicals Help Desk (PHD) is staffed by students who help individuals find and use microfilm, print copies of periodicals, print and email copies of microfilm, and find books on the 3rd and 4th floors. PHD is open only during fall and spring semester.Consultations

Librarians provide instruction on library/information resources for UMD students, faculty, and staff in several ways:
Instruction sessions can be arranged for any UMD class. Librarians will travel to classrooms or the library instruction labs may be used. Information sessions on databases, topics, and other resources are offered for individuals either in offices or a library viewing room. An information session on new resources is offered for faculty and staff every semester.- Instruction sessions offered for student groups
