Can community users access databases from outside the UMD Library?
Unfortunately, due to vendor licensing restrictions, access to many of the our databases and other electronic resources from outside the UMD Library (e.g., from home or office) is limited to current students (in credit-earning courses), staff, and faculty at the University of Minnesota Duluth. This is a non-negotiable part of the contracts we sign (and there are no fee-for-access options for persons not affiliated with the University).
Members of the public, however, are welcome to use the UMD Library's electronic resources "on-site during these hours." We have structured our licensing agreements with database providers to make this possible. The public is also welcome to use on-site collections and most facilities. One does not need a card or pass to enter and use the Library.
Exceptions to
these restrictions include some resources that are publicly available on the
web and are listed as
"Accessible by All Users" on
the Databases page.
Also, our Library Catalog is publicly available for searching, to identify books, journals and other materials that we own. Courtesy cards are available to the public.
