Computing at the UMD Library

Basic access computing is available in the library on SunRay workstations and Compaq and Dell Desktop PCs.  Full access computing is available in two computer labs located on the first floor of the library.

BASIC ACCESS:

  • SunRays:  The SunRay terminals provide email, web browsing, Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office, and Open Office products.  Over 100 terminals are located on the first, third and fourth floors of the library.  See map.
  • PCs:  The Desktop Windows PCs are available on the second and third floors of the library.  They provide e-mail, web browsing, Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office and Open Office products as well as access to the following server-based databases: Ballet, NAICS, Research Insight, Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy and SciFinder Scholar 2007. 
  • Macs:  Twenty-eight Macs are available on the third floor of the library.

FULL ACCESS:

  • The computer labs, L118 and L119, offer full access computing.
  • A complete list of the software available on these computers is found here.

Printing: Printing from the library computers is handled at the UniPrint stations located on each floor of the library.  Printouts cost 5 cents per page.  Please see the map for printer station locations in the library.

Laptops: Laptop jacks are located throughout the library.  Some of these connections are in various study carrels.  There is also at least one connection jack in each of the study rooms. Please see the map for laptop connections.

Scanning: A small flatbed scanner is available for public use on the second floor of the library.

Adaptive Equipment Rooms

The library has three adaptive equipment rooms configured with the following hardware and software:

L126: 

Hardware: Windows PC with 21" monitor, trackball, flatbed scanner, Reading Edge, and adjustable height work station.

Software: JAWS, Zoomtext, Dragon-Naturally-Speaking, Open Book, Text Help

L124:

Hardware: Both MAC and PC computers with 21" monitor.

Software:  The PC has Zoomtext and Jaws while the MAC has internal screen magnification software.

L126:

Hardware: Windows PC with 21" monitor, trackball, flatbed scanner and Reading Edge, Braille Embosser and adjustable height work station.

Software: JAWS, Zoomtext, Dragon-Naturally-Speaking, Open Book, Text Help and software to convert text to braille.
