Scholarship
Jim Davis Scholarship Applications will be available in Spring 2008.
The requirements for this $750 scholarship are:
- Be a full-time economics major at UMD
- Have at least junior standing at the time of application
- Have a GPA of at least 3.2
- Complete an essay of 500 words (double-spaced, typewritten) describing what, in your opinion, will be the most important economic issue in the 21 st century (e.g., labor, environment, international trade, etc.). Be sure to define the issue and why it will be of importance.
Econ Club
The Econ Club meets on a regular basis during the academic year. Past Club activities include attending the Minnesota Economic Association meetings, visiting the Minneapolis Federal Reserve, and attending the Winter Institute in St. Cloud. Social events, such as bowling, are also held.
UROPs
Past UROP Projects have included "Has the African Growth and Opportunity Act Increased the Flow Between the USA and Eligible African Countries" (Andrew McColley, sponsored by Dr. Bedassa Tadesse); "Interest Rate Spreads and Deviations from Purchasing Power Parity Across Countries" (Paul Hochsprung, sponsored by Dr. David Doorn); "Evaluating the Effect of State Children's Health Insurance Program Coverage on the Take-up Rate of Employer-Provided Health Insurance" (Leah Kasper, sponsored by Dr. David Doorn and Dr. Jennifer Schultz); "Exploring Alternative Energy Choices at UMD (Matt Burris, sponsored by Dr. Curt Anderson).
Faculty
Jennifer Schultz and David Doorn have both been awarded a University of Minnesota Grant-In-Aid of Research, Artistry and Scholarship. Jennifer will be investigating the implications of rising employer health insurance costs while David will be examining employer provided health insurance and the demand for part-time labor. David and Jennifer collaborated on a related health care issue and received a grant from the W.E. Upjohn Institute.
