health care management program
If you’re looking to make a difference in one of the nation’s biggest, most important, and most challenging industries, our new Health Care Management Program is for you.

The health care industry provides career opportunities for business students who want to make a positive contribution to the health of individuals and communities. Hospitals, clinics, government agencies, pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms, insurance and managed care organizations, and consulting firms are looking for i ntelligent, creative and assertive managers in this challenging but rewarding field. In the clinical sector, health care managers work on improving quality and efficiency, controlling costs, implementing new technology (e.g. electronic medical records), recruiting and retaining health care professionals, ensuring compliance with changing regulations, billing and reimbursement, and implementing programs to improve the health of communities. Managers in non-clinical settings work in a variety of areas such as health insurance benefits and enrollment, health information technology, health care marketing, pharmacy benefit management, provider network contracting, medical device and biomedical consulting, and health policy.
Our Health Care Management program builds on the established strength of the academic departments and existing courses in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. You will gain a solid foundation of knowledge in business and the health care industry along with practical skills to apply that knowledge. The curriculum includes business courses and specific content in the following areas: health care management; health care quality management; economics of health care; health policy analysis; financial management of health institutions; legal aspects of health care; ethics; medial informatics; and comparative health care systems.
You will learn from experience how the healthcare system works through collaborative research and consulting projects among students, faculty, and the health care community. You will begin working on important issues as part of an internship program, and learn from successful professionals in the healthcare industry. Internships offer opportunities to gain valuable experience in health care organizations, develop professional skills and network with health care executives. Organizations sponsoring internships include Allina United Hospital, Broen Memorial Home, Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center, Duluth Clinic, HealthPartners, Miller-Dwan Medical Center and Foundation, Minnesota Hospital Association, MinuteClinic, St. Luke’s Hospital and Clinics, St. Mary’s Medical Center and St. Francis Medical Center.
If you decide to continue your education through graduate studies, the Health Care Management program provides the fundamental education and experience necessary for further degrees in health administration. Our c ourses are offered by full-time faculty members with terminal degrees (Ph.D. and equivalent) and professionally qualified instructors from health care organizations. The Health Care Management program is a member of the Association for University Programs in Health Administration.
Serving in such an important, life-changing industry has its unique demands, but it also has its unique rewards. If you are interested in health and health care, we can help you make a difference in healthcare facilities, and by extension, the lives of the patients they serve.
