marketing

Marketing is about understanding consumers and their needs, developing market offerings that satisfy those needs, and communicating with the target market with the intent of creating an exchange. In this sense, marketing serves as not only the “eyes and ears” of an organization, but also its mouthpiece. In order to be successful, marketers need to be multi-talented professionals, who understand a consumer's psyche, can conduct research to empirically answer a question, and design and implement effective strategies pertaining to product development and management, pricing, distribution, and promotions.

The Department of Marketing at UMD is comprised of seven full-time and two adjunct faculty. The marketing major is one of the most popular majors on campus. Students majoring in marketing develop a broad knowledge base of theoretical and practical aspects of marketing. Our faculty is engaged in conducting cutting-edge research on a variety of topics in the basic, applied, and pedagogical domains.

Prior to the summer of 2006, management and marketing majors were both housed in the Management Studies department. Given the explosive growth in both these majors over the last few years, a decision was made to create a separate Department of Marketing to help serve the student community better and to make it administratively easier to manage the departments.
